In order to promote food sufficiency and address the high cost of food in the nation, the House of Representatives decided yesterday to provide the federal government with N648 million for six months in exchange for a 50% pay reduction. In response, however, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society organizations (CSOs) like Yiaga Africa and ActionAid stated that the issue was not the salaries of House of Representatives members but rather their allowances, and that in order to have a significant effect on their support efforts, the fictitious allowances should be cut in half. Additionally, the legislators pleaded on Nigerians to be more understanding of President Bola Tinubu's administration's efforts to alleviate the difficulties and sufferings of the populace.
